The purpose is to give people in the community the opportunity to be actively involved I reducing the risk of theft and burglaries in the locality and particularly protecting our elderly neighbours. It allows the Gardai to issue text alerts to any members of the community who have registered on the system. MURROE-BOHER GAA: Murroe-Boher rounded off a very good week on Sunday by winning the first ever East Limerick Under 21 12-a-side Hurling Final at Boher. The two teams met in Round 1 at Harty Park, Murroe, on March 16 when Murroe-Boher won comfortably but Caherline were determined to restore pride second time around and really took the game to Murroe-Boher. Murroe/Boher started well with a long range point from Mike Dee but this was the only time the locals were to be in front until the closing minutes. Caherline played like players possessed and fired over two quick points before a defensive mistake in the Murroe/Boher square cost dearly and by half time this goal remained the difference with the sides at 1.06 to 6 points. The 2nd half saw both sides exchange score for score with top quality hurling and very intense play. Mike Ryan’s free taking kept Murroe/Boher always within reach as did some good team work up front that paid off with good points from both Karl Cusack and Mike Ryan. But it was a Joe Keays goal that eventually put Murroe/Boher in front 8 minutes from time. Keays went on a blistering 40 metre run before crashing the ball to the Caherline net from 25 metres out. Not beaten yet, Caherline responded with two superb points to level the match but Mike Ryan’s clinical free taking punished two Caherline indiscretions. Caherline besieged the Murroe/Boher goal in the last minutes before the final whistle sounded but could not get that much needed score. The final score was Murroe-Boher 1.11, Caherline 1.09. MURROE AFC: The club has excellent news this week with both the under-14 Girls and under-16 Girls winning their respective league titles. On Thursday the under-16’s drew 1-1 with Holycross to win the title outright with Shauna O Dwyer scoring the all important goal, while, on the same night, other results in the under-14’s division meant that Murroe secured the league. Having finished level on points with Holycross both clubs sportingly decided to share the title. The under-14’s then played Herbertstown in the Cup quarter-final on Friday and goals from Lisa Leonard, Aine Cooke and Lonnie Kelly secured safe passage to the semis. The under-14’s and under-16’s were presented with their trophies and medals after their matches. The A team kept their promotion hopes alive by completing a 4-0 over Athlunkard with Alan Carroll hitting 2 and Brian Quinn and an OG accounted for Murroe’s tally. The B’s, whose season is coming to a close, lost to Moyross with Darragh Ryan scoring for Murroe.

CASTLE GOLF SOCIETY: Twenty seven members of the Society travelled to Nenagh Golf Club on Saturday April 27, to play their second outing of the season. There were many positives contributing to making it a wonderful day for the player’s enjoyment: a glorious sunny morning that promised and delivered, the opportunity for players to improve their position on the G.O.Y. table, a plentiful supply of good natured banter and a high level of expectancy for a good performance from each player from a quality field. The course was in a superb condition, thanks to the green-keepers who, after an extremely harsh winter displayed all their knowledge and expertise in restoring the course to its former high standard. Players responded with spells of admirable golf and a high level of competitiveness which was reflected in the scoring with only two points separating the top four prizewinners. Noel Ryan displayed a level of golfing talent that raised the bar sufficiently to claim the first prize with a brilliant score of 36 points. Congratulations to Noel. Declan Ahern’s consistency yielded an excellent score of 35 points to take the second prize. Eddie Madden powered his way to a comfortable 35 points and was rewarded with third place. Seamus Keane had an impressive 34 points to deservedly win the 4th prize. The presentation of prizes took place in Charcos later that evening. Noel Ryan, Captain of the Society, welcomed all those present and said he was delighted with the outing. Noel thanked the Walpoles for their hospitality, the players for their support and the committee for their efficiency, and those who helped in any way. He congratulated all the prizewinners. The results are as follows: 1st prize, Noel Ryan with 36 points; 2nd prize, Declan Ahern, with 35 points; 3rd prize, Eddie Madden, with 35 points; 4th prize, Seamus Keane, with 34 points; front nine, Tim McCarthy, with 23 points; back nine, Ger Carroll, with 18 points; nearest the pin, Michael O’Mahony; longest drive, Willie Reddy. Next outing will be at Castletroy Golf Club on this Saturday. Tee time 10.00 to 11.30.am

CASTLECONNELL YOUTH: Sport will be the theme of Youth Work Ireland Week at Castleconnell Youth Project with young people, staff and volunteers taking part in a Sports and Fitness Programme, jumping in the boxing ring and getting in shape for the Great Limerick Run. ‘Our Young Women’s Group are taking part in a Sports & Fitness Programme that has proved extremely popular,’ said Martin Duhig, Castleconnell Youth Club. Away from the sporting banter the Young Men’s Club are taking part in a Sexual Education and Wellbeing Programme in partnership with the Red Ribbon project. Along with Caherconlish, Castleconnell Youth Project is part of the East Limerick SPY (Special Project for Youth) Programmes.

COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: The Community Games committee wish to express their thanks to parishioners for their most generous contributions at the recent Church Gate collection. Congratulations to Bobby Kaghazchi and Shannon Smith who won gold medals in their respective events at the Swimming county Finals recently and will represent Limerick in the National Finals in Athlone at the end of May. That brings to 11 the number of children from the parish participating in National Finals in May i.e. 2 swimmers as above, cross country athlete Peter O’Grady and our 8 under 10 indoor soccer stars. Congrats also to Padraig Harnett on winning silver in his county solo music competition. Date for Diary: Bank Holiday Monday May 6, 3.00pm, Area Athletics qualifiers ( under-8 –under-16) at Ahane GAA Field. Egg and Spoon and fun races for under-5’s and under-7. We are encouraging all parents/guardians living in the community to bring their children along and have a go.

Community Alert Update: Following on recent meetings, the Community Alert committee are moving at pace to put in place a number of priority proposals that will progress its reorganisation within the community/parish area. The provision of new signage and the upgrading of the existing signage are being proceeded with immediately. Quotations for the signage have been received already but it is necessary to find funds to purchase same. The texting system that presently appears to be the way forward for most community alert groups is also being proceeded with immediately. This has an annual cost factor and will require funding to be sourced locally. It has been decided in committee that a sum of about €5 per user be sought to fund the foregoing. This is a very modest and affordable sum that will help in making our district a safer place. Application is being made to the Garda authorities for permission to collect same. It is envisaged that each household will be called on by designated collectors in the near future. They will also be distributing helpful telephone numbers and printed advice on home and personal security. The texting system will require having individual signed-up approval from those wishing to be part of it. A number of applications for the installation of a Telephone Alert System have been received and are being processed presently. Further applications can be made by contacting Hon Secretary, Liz Stanley.

Caherconlish/Caherline Community Alert: Supt Keane of An Garda Siochana Limerick South Division and Garda John McCormack, Caherconlish Garda Station attended our Community Alert meeting held in the Millennium Centre on last Tuesday evening April 23rd. A large crowd of residents were present to hear Supt Keane update the community on the efforts the Gardai are making in the prevention of crime in the area and also gave an extended talk on personal safety, home and property security. He also stated that Caherconlish was going to hold onto its Garda Station and also its compliment of two Garda and a Sergeant. This most welcome news was greeted with a round of applause. He gave some statistics on crime in the area and stated that Caherconlish was no worse than any other place. But in the first third of this year, in comparison to the same period of the year before, there had been an increase in thefts from cars and burglary in particular. A number of persons are about to go before the courts in certain cases. It was essential that all crime was reported and logged into the Garda Pulse system. That ensures that when analysis is being done on an area, the volume of activity becomes a factor in whether a Garda Barracks is marked for closer or not. Those who attended the meeting played a full part in a question and answer session and in reply to many questions placed before Supt Keane by them, he gave the fullest possible answers. It was refreshing to see a senior member of an Garda being so open and helpful. Caherconlish has been under close monitoring by the Roxboro Division and already we have been part of Operation Trasna and Operation Alloy which is ongoing. It is most important that all suspect activity be reported to An Garda Siochana. There is no other agency or service within the state to deal with law and order issues only An Garda and this was clearly stated by the Supt at the meeting. Garda McCormack said that he intends to visit regularly senior residents that live in isolated locations and who may require such a service. At present a list is being made to help realise this worthwhile undertaking.

Liam Lawton Huge Success: It was a night filled with nostalgia when Liam Lawton and his musicians moved centre stage in concert onto the Altar of Caherconlish Church on Sunday last.. It was fifty years ago since such a big sound reverberated around the building which was originally the Shamrock Ballroom. The old Hi Fi ceiling in place since 1960 done its purchaser the late Fr Tom Hayes proud as it transmitted the rich melow tones of Fr Liam to an appreciative audience. The followers of the singing priest and composer came from near and far. There were a number of people from the US. To add to the enjoyment, the local Adult and Youth Choir under the direction of Valerie Walsh done the name of the parish proud as they performed a number of songs with Fr Liam. They really were most professional and pitch perfect on the night. When a choir receives the accolades from an international personage such as Liam Lawton for their perfo0rmance it is saying something special. The organisers led by Phil Martin are to be complimented on their project. The ladies who done the flower arranging too must be complimented.

ig Welcome for Liam Lawton Concert -The Shamrock Revisited: It will be the case of the Shamrock revisited on this Sunday April 21 when a concert will be held in Caherconlish Church to help raise parish funds. It is half a century since the last concert or public entertainment event took place in the building. At that time 1963, the building was known as the Shamrock Ballroom, a community development led by the late Fr Tom Hayes. The Shamrock was to quote its foreman, the late Jack Reardon, as the only building to be planned as a Theatre, opened as a Ballroom and finish up a Church. It gained an unworthy appendage as being a white elephant at that time but the late Jack reminded us that whereby other Ballroom of Romances came to an end, the Shamrock still filled its aisles with people. It served its purpose. So on April 21 next the aisles will once again be filled in enjoyment of Fr Liam Lawton’s arrival here as he performs in Concert at Our Lady Mother of the Church, Caherconlish. He will be joined by our local Adult and Youth Choirs under the direction of Valerie WalshTickets cost €20 and will be sold door to door in the coming days. Tickets are also available at Caherconlish Post Office or from Fr. Roy (087)2225150, and others. Doors open at 7pm. Concert starts 8pm sharp. Full support is appreciated.
