Limerick Court was told this road rign at Mulgrave Street is "deceiving"

A MOTORIST was thanked at Limerick Court for bringing a deceiving road sign to the attention of Limerick City Council.

The man appeared before a sitting of the monthly parking court after he was prosecuted by the local authority for parking in a bus lane at Mulgrave Street.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly was told a fixed notice penalty was issued by a traffic warden last year and that court proceedings were initiated when the defendant failed to pay the €60 fine.

When the case was called the motorist admitted parking at the location but insisted he did not realise it was a bus lane.

The man said there was no signage where he parked to indicate it was a bus lane.

The man told the court he had a few drinks” at a nearby house the previous night and that he had parked his car overnight rather than drive home.

He said he had parked “under” a parking sign which indicated that on-street pay parking commences at 9.30am.

He said there was no mention of a bus lane on the sign.

The man said he was “very careful about these things” and that he had returned to collect his vehicle before 9.30am to find a ticket on the windscreen.

In her evidence, the prosecuting traffic warden confirmed she had issued a ticket at 8.23am.

When asked by Judge O’Kelly about the road sign at the location she agreed it was “deceiving” and that there was no sign in the immediate area where the man had parked area indicating that it was a bus lane.

Dismissing the case, the judge thanked the motorist

“Thank you for bringing it to the attention of the authorities. Maybe they will do something about it,” he said.
