A 77-YEAR-OLD Limerick man died overnight following a road crash on the Old Dublin Road.

He was a passenger in a car which was in a collision with a jeep at Reilly’s Cross on the Tipperary side of the Castleconnell roundabout.

The 75-year-old driver of the car remains in a critical condition in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital this morning. The driver, 48, of the jeep is also in the Regional but his condition is described as stable.

The deceased man, who hasn’t been named yet, is from the parish of Castleconnell/Ahane/Montpelier.

One person told the Limerick Leader that everyone is in shock at the news this morning as they hoped he would pull through.

“A complete and utter gentleman is how I would describe him. It’s terrible news,” said one local.

This is the first death on Limerick’s roads in 2013 and gardai are appealing for witnesses of the accident to contact them in Castleconnell garda station on 061-377105, Henry Street garda station on 061 212400 or the Garda confidential line 1800666111.

The road between the Mackey Roundabout and Daly’s Cross was closed in both directions for a number of hours to allow forensic collision investigators conduct an examination of the scene.

It has since reopened.
