New Munster anthem release for Limerick autistic school

MUNSTER fans are being urged to support another team this Friday, when a special song to raise funds for Bluebell ABA School for autistic children is released.

The Munster Song, penned by Phillip "Scally" Scanlon, and performed by pop star Greg Ryan and former Bluebell pupil Glen Keating, has an anthemic feel and Greg is hoping it will help keep the voluntary school open.

The single will be available in stores from March 28, and has been available for download for some weeks now, proving very popular on www.downloadmusic.ie

Raheen-based Bluebell is in danger of closing due to lack of funds. Since it was formed in 2004, the school has been kept open through fundraising efforts and with the home tuition grants received by parents.

The school, which uses a special method of education called Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA), has proven highly successful with some autistic children.

Glen, who sings the first verse of the song, spent two years at the school and is now enrolled at Scoil Ide in Corbally. Manager of Bluebell, Deirdre Bourke, said the improvement in Glen since he first started with Bluebell has been phenomenal.

"When Glen started with us, his sentences were all jumbled and he had huge difficulty comprehending what people would say to him. But in the last two years, the difference in him is phenomenal, to the point now that he can sing clearly," said Ms Bourke, whose son Patrick also attends the school.

Greg, formerly of boy band Zoo, is appealing to Munster fans to support the cause.

"This is a mission of awareness rather than fundraising. The school provides these children with the type of education that has been recommended for them by psychologists and is the only type of schooling that has scientific evidence to prove that the children make huge progress."

And Greg's friend and You're A Star judge Keith Duffy has also lent his support to the single.

"As patron of Irish Action Autism and I am delighted to support Philip and Greg in their awareness and fundraising efforts to help keep Limerick's Bluebell ABA school for children with autism open," Mr Duffy said this week.
