THE mother of a young boy who was found dead at his home in Charleville earlier this week has appeared in court charged with his murder.

Diane Ward, aged 43, of Harrisson Place, Charleville, is accused of killing eight-year-old Anthony Ward at her home on Monday.

During a special sitting of Limerick District Court this evening, Det Sgt Michael Corbett said he arrested the defendant at Cork University Hospital at 5.25pm yesterday.

He said following her arrest she was taken to Mallow garda station where she was charged at 4.45pm today. Judge Eugene O’Kelly was told Ms Ward made no reply to the charge.

Supt Pat McCarthy said the defendant was examined by a consultant psychiatrict at Cork University Hospital and he asked that she be remanded in custody to the Dochas centre in Dublin, which he said, would facilitate her admission to the Central Mental Hospital where there is a bed available.

Solicitor Paul Cagney said his client was objecting to the application as she “does not wish to attend the Central Mental Hospital”.

He asked that she be remanded “in the usual way”.

Noting that bail is a matter for the High Court, Judge O’Kelly remanded Ms Ward in custody to the Dochas Centre and he directed that she be examined by a consultant forensic psychiatrist.

He remanded Ms Ward to appear before Newcastle West Court next Tuesday, September 11.
