Model County Limerick farmers strip off for calendar to help Bothar

BEEF from Limerick cattle is very popular in Germany and the United Kingdom but so too are the beefy farmers who rear the cattle.

Not one but two Limerick farmers feature in the Irish Farmers Calendar 2012. Gearoid Hickey, Ballyneety is Mr April while Stephen Fitzgerald, Croom is Mr November and appears on the front cover.

This is the calendar’s third year and they are seeing huge sales in Germany and the UK says Stephen.

“They are selling very well in Germany and the UK for some strange reason but we won’t ask any questions. A quarter of the profits go to Bothar so the more sales the better,” said Stephen.

The calendar is on sale in Eason and on-line at www.farmercalendar.com where the Germans and British have been buying it in bucket-loads.

Farmers have to apply to be in the calendar but the first thing Gearoid and Stephen heard about it was when they got a phone call from organiser Ciara Ryan. Female friends of Gearoid and Stephen applied for them on their behalf.

“One of my friends in Macra suggested I send in details and a photo but I didn’t take much notice. She sent off the details unknownst to me and when I got the phone call saying I’d been chosen all the pieces in the puzzle fitted together! I’ve done a lot worse for Macra so I said I’d go along because Bothar is a great charity,” said Stephen, who is PRO of Croom Macra.

Gearoid Hickey was the exact same although he doesn’t even know who nominated him.

“They asked me to go to Gorey for the photoshoot and once I knew it would help Bothar I said I might as well,” said Gearoid, who is a livestock farmer.
