THE British Ministry of Defence has condemned threats made against Irish men and women who are members of the British armed forces.
In a chilling statement, which was delivered at the Republican Sinn Fein Sean South Commemoration in Limerick earlier this month, Continuity IRA prisoners at Portlaoise Prison declared that it considers Irish people who join the British Army as a “legitimate target”.
The statement, which was read out at the Republican Plot at Mount Saint Lawrence cemetery has sparked a war- of-words between dissident republicans in Limerick and Dublin.
Around 400 Irish people are currently working for the British armed forces and it is understood that they have been informed of the threats, which are being investigated by gardai.
When asked about the threats, a spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defence said: “We condemn any threat of mindless violence against members of the British Armed Forces. We are committed to protecting them and all Irish personnel are being informed about this specific threat. The statement made by the Continuity IRA is a matter for the Garda Síochána”
Meanwhile, gardai investigating the activities of dissident republicans in Limerick arrested a man this Monday morning.
It is understood the man, who is aged in his 40’s, was one of those who attended the Republican Sinn Fein commemoration on January 6.
He was arrested following a search of a house on the outskirts of the city.
However, gardai would not confirm if the arrest was linked to the CIRA threats.
The suspect was brought to Henry Street garda station following his arrest where he was questioned under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
