Meeting to take place in Limerick over ICTU day of action

PEOPLE across Limerick are being asked to contribute ideas to how the city can respond to a planned day of protest in February.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has given the green light for a major protest to take place in cities across the state on Saturday, February 9.
It is being organised with a view to demanding a restructuring of Ireland’s debt burden.
Now, the Limerick Council of Trade Unions is asking those interested in taking part to attend a meeting on Thursday, January 10 in the Mechanics Institute, Hartstonge Street, at 7pm.
President of the Limerick Trades Council Mike McNamara hopes the event also serves as an opportunity to “rejuvenate” the organisation across the city and county.
“A handful of people have been keeping it going, and we want new, interested people,” he explained.
Mr McNamara added: “I want to see a full turnout on the day of action, and the people will show the government with their feet what they think of the austerity imposed on the people. It will help probably to bring about the chance necessary for workers and their families to live for today, instead of paying debts for tomorrow.”
Congress has given the green light for demonstrations to take place in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Sligo, Limerick and Waterford.
They are timed to coincide with EU Council of Ministers’ meetings, because Ireland will hold the EU Presidency for the first six months of 2013.
Members of the public, and representatives of trade unions across the city and county are invited to the meeting.
