A MAN was remanded in custody after he appeared in court charged in connection with an armed robbery at an off-licence at the weekend.

Dermot Boland, aged 31, of Maple Court, Kennedy Park is accused of robbing €500 in cash from O’Brien’s at the Parkway Shopping Centre last Saturday afternoon.

It is alleged he threatened staff with a hatchet before escaping with the cash.

Boland is also accused of stealing a handbag from a woman on Cruises Street on the same day and with attempting to rob another man at William Street - also on the same day.

The defendant is also charged with stealing four hair clippers, worth €50 each from the Argos store at Cruises Street on Sunday afternoon.

Det Garda Ger Healy opposed a bail application made by solicitor John Devane citing the seriousness of some of the charges and, what he claimed was the strength of the evidence against Boland.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly said he was refusing bail in the circumstances.

He remanded the defendant in custody Until January 15, pending DPP’s Directions.
