A YOUNG man has appeared in court charged in connection with an incident during which a banana was thrown at international soccer player, Gael Clichy, at Thomond Park last year.

Kelvin Reynolds, aged 20, of Pinewood Avenue, Caherdavin is accused of engaging in “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace” at Thomond Park stadium on August 5, 2012.

He is also accused of assaulting a garda sergeant on the same date, contrary to Section 2 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

It is alleged the offences took place during the high profile soccer friendly between Limerick FC and Premier League champions, Manchester City, which drew a crowd of more than 20,000 people.

At Limerick Court this afternoon, Judge Eugene O’Kelly was told the defendant replied “I’m sorry” when he was formally charged in relation to the incident.

Reynolds was granted free legal aid and an application for disclosure - made by solicitor Sarah Ryan - was granted.

The case was adjourned until April 10, next.
