Man, 23, charged in connection with County Limerick knife attack
A MAN has appeared in court charged in connection with a double knife attack in the centre of Newcastle West on Bank Holiday Monday, in which two men received serious injuries to their faces and necks.
Stephen Daly, 23, of Sharwood Estate, Newcastle West has been charged of assaulting causing harm to David O’Connor and Tim Lynch on Maiden Street on August 6, contrary to section 3 of the Offences Against the Persons Act.
Daly was also charged with possession of a knife or blade contrary to section 39 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act on the same date.
Daly appeared before a special sitting of Limerick city District Court this Wednesday morning.
Garda David Gee gave evidence of arresting Daly at Churchtown, Newcastle West at 10.31pm on Bank Holiday Monday.
He said that the accused was then brought to Newcastle West garda station, where he was held overnight before being formally charged at 8.55pm on Tuesday.
Garda Gee said that Daly made no reply after he was read each of the three charges.
Solicitor Michael O’Donnell, defending Daly, made an application for free legal aid, which was approved. Mr O’Donnell said that he did not wish to make an application for bail at this time.
Judge John O’Neill remanded Daly in custody to appear before Limerick city District Court again on August 15.
