Limerick woman fined for bringing drugs into prison

Limerick Court

Limerick Court

A WOMAN who was caught passing €50 worth of drugs to her ex-partner at Limerick Prison was under duress to so do, Limerick District Court has heard.

Ciara Geraghty, 25, of Downey Avenue, Garryowen, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale or supply at the prison on June 9, 2010.

She had been on a routine visit at around 10.30am, Sgt Donal Cronin said, when a prison officer saw her pass the drugs.

Ms Geraghty further pleaded guilty to possession of drugs at Henry Street garda station on October 6, 2010, when Garda Brian Loughlin searched her handbag and found a wrap of heroin.

Solicitor Tom Kiely said she had been “under considerable emotional pressure” to bring the drugs in for her ex-partner, who was just starting a lengthy sentence.

For possession of drugs on October 6, Ms Geraghty was fined €100 and a fine of €400 was imposed for the supply offence at the prison. Judge Eugene O’Kelly said he had to take into consideration her guilty plea, her own drug addiction problems, the efforts she was making to kick her habit and the fact that she had been “under pressure” to supply to her ex-partner.
