Limerick takeaways closed over hygiene concerns

THE Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has confirmed that two takeaway restaurants in Limerick city were the subject of closure orders during October
The Chilli Kebabish takeaway on Ellen Street was ordered to close on October 2, last but has since reopened after the order was lifted ten days later.
Separately, the Lotus takeaway on Clare Street was ordered to close on October 19, last and according to the FSAI the order remains in place.
In both cases, the closure orders were issued by environmental health officers with the Health Service Executive who conducted inspections of the premises.
The Chilli Kebabish was closed after it was found to be in breach of the 1998 FSAI Act, while the Lotus takeaway was closed under the provisions of the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.
The FSAI has not disclosed the specific reasons as to why either of the premises were ordered to close.
The Delight House take-away in Bruree was also the subject of a closure order during October and according to the FSAI a total of twelve premises across the country were subject to closure orders during October - the highest monthly figure in a decade.
“Every Enforcement Order is one too many and it is extremely disappointing that the numbers of food businesses on which Orders needed to be served was so high in October,” said Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI in response to the figures,
“The inspectors found illegal, unhygienic or unsafe foods, with significant breaches of food safety legislation that put people’s health at serious risk. There’s absolutely no justification for negligence in this area. The legal onus is on food businesses to act responsibly and ensure that the food they serve and sell is safe for consumption,” he added.
