GARDAI are appealing for information about a robbery in the city centre during which a shop assistant was injured.

The incident happened at Gleeson’s Spar, Catherine Street last Sunday afternoon.

According to investigating gardai, the culprit was in possession of an implement - believed to have been a syringe - when he entered the store, which is located near Sarsfield Credit Union.

A member of staff who confronted the culprit sustained injuries and had to receive medical treatment in hospital following the struggle.

He is said to have been very traumatised by his ordeal.

According to gardai the culprit left the store empty-handed following the incident.

A garda spokesperson said the man, who was wearing a balaclava to disguise his face, was of medium to stocky build.

He was wearing blue jeans and a black/navy top with three white stripes.

“We are appealing to the public for information in relation to this robbery. As it was during the day, maybe someone saw this male running from the shop,” said the spokesperson.

Gardai have viewed cctv footage from the store and surrounding areas in an effort to apprehend the culprit.

Separately, gardai are investigating another robbery which happened at a shop at O’Connell Avenue at the weekend.

That incident happened at around 6.45pm on Saturday when a man entered the store, threatened staff and demanded the contents of the till.

The culprit, who escaped with around €700 in cash, is described as being around 6’ 1” tall.

“He was wearing a dark green jacket with a hood and his face was covered at the time,” said a garda spokesman who added that the man spoke with a Dublin accent.

Gardai at Henry Street are investigating both incidents.
