Limerick pubs to be targeted in garda clamp down

Chief Supt David Sheahan

THE HEAD of the Limerick garda division has said that pubs are to be targeted in a new drive to clamp down on underage drinking, price fluctuations and other licensing offences.

Chief Superintendent David Sheahan said that during the past three months gardai have carried out “test purchases” in 17 pubs in Limerick city and county, and found that ten were in breach of licensing laws.

Speaking at the latest Limerick joint policing committee meeting at County Hall, Chief Supt Sheahan said that local gardai have “come up with a different model” for clamping down on illegal trading in pubs, and will be stepping up detection of broader offences such as adults buying alcohol for children, and publicans illegally fluctuating prices during sports fixtures.

Chief Supt Sheahan also welcomed a “major reduction” in year-on-year crime figures, which has seen falls in burglaries, car theft, possession of drugs for sale or supply and public order offences.
