Limerick parents urged not to buy illegal fireworks

SINN Féin city councillor Maurice Quinlivan has appealed to parents not to buy illegal fireworks or allow their children to play with them after being “inundated” with complaints in the past few days from across the city.
Cllr Quinlivan said he has been contacted by some “very distressed residents” from different parts of the city about the use of illegal fireworks.
“Fireworks and bangers are a recurring problem year after year and there is a great danger of someone’s home being set on fire or an oil tank going on fire putting lives at risk.
Cllr Quinlivan said earlier this week, a house in Thomondgate was damaged when a banger was put in the letter box of an elderly tenant destroying the door and windows in the bungalow.
“There is a new type of banger on sale in Limerick which is extremely loud and is causing concern to the elderly especially. A number of people have also complained that their pets are becoming very distressed. I am very concerned that some very young children are getting these bangers and may cause injury to themselves, local residents and damage to local property,” he said.
It is undertood gardai will mount a number of operations clamping down on the illegal sale of fireworks over the coming weeks.
