Brian Curtin was sentenced to two years imprisonment for driving without insurance

A YOUNG man who has more than a dozen convictions for driving without insurance was sentenced to a total of two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a further three offences.

Brian Curtin, aged 24, of Railway House, Old Cork Road admitted driving three different cars while uninsured at three different locations over the past year.

Limerick District Court was told the offences happened at Rathuard, Ballysheedy on June 14, 2011; at Tipperary Road on December 28, 2011 and at Courtbrack Avenue, South Circular Road on September 5, 2012.

In addition to not being insured, Sgt Donal Cronin said Curtin was also disqualified from driving at the time of each of the offences. He said the defendant was disqualified from driving for 20 years in December 2009.

He said Curtin has several other convictions for no insurance dating back to when he was underage.

Sgt Cronin added that the defendant has served a number of prison sentences in the past.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan said Curtin accepted that he has a large number of convictions for road traffic offences.

She said several of his family members who were also “in and out of prison” in the past had settled down in their mid to late 20s and that she believed there is hope for her client.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly said it was a “terrible waste of a young man’s 20s” but he said the court “has to look not only at the man but everybody else as well.”

He said he would be sending out the wrong message to those who obey the road traffic laws of he did not impose a custodial sentence.

He sentenced Curtin to a total of 24 months in prison and he disqualified him for a total of ten years.

Curtin was also fined €1,000 for driving without an NCT on two of the dates.
