Limerick man in court on IRA charge

A LIMERICK city man has appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin after he was charged in connection with investigations into dissident republican activity in Limerick
Michael Kiely, aged 42, of Abbeyvale, Corbally is charged, under the provisions of the Offences Against the State Act with membership of an illegal organisation - styling itself on the IRA - on January 6, last.
Det Garda Oliver Foley said he formally arrested the accused in Limerick shortly before 2pm today and that Kiely made no reply when charged.
However, Det Garda Foley told state solicitor Claire Daly that Kiely later told him “I am not a member of the IRA” when the charge was explained to him in the precincts of the court.
Kiely was granted free-legal aid by the non-jury court and solicitor John Devane assigned to represent him.
Kiely did not apply for bail and he was remanded in custody to appear before the Court again next Tuesday, January 22.
