Limerick man in court for Golden Vale theft
State solicitor Aidan Judge said the DPP consented to Egan being returned for trial
A KILMALLOCK man charged in connection with the theft of hundreds of thousands of euros from Golden Vale Mart has been sent forward for trial to Limerick Circuit Court.
Liam Egan, aged 51, of Gortboy, Kilmallock is charged with a total of twelve counts of theft, and making gain or causing loss by deception at Golden Vale Mart, Gotoon, Kilmallock on a number of dates in 2008.
The total amount is believed to be in the region of €300,000.
State solicitor Aidan Judge told the court that the book of evidence had been produced and served on the accused who was present in court.
Mr Judge told the court that the DPP had consented to Egan being returned for trial to the next sitting of Limerick Circuit Court.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly imparted the alibi warning advising Egan that if any part of his defence relates to alibi evidence then he must give details to the State within 14 days.
Solicitor John O’Donoghue made an application for legal aid on behalf of his client who he said is not working.
State solicitor, Aidan Judge, said he had a concern in relation to legal aid as Egan, he said, has a “substantial amount of land” and is a “man of property”.
Judge O’Kelly said that legal aid would only be considered in terms of a written application and a statement of means.
Mr O’Donoghue said he would leave the matter until the case goes before the circuit court.
Egan was remanded on continuing bail on his own bond of €500.
