Limerick man hid cannabis in attic of his home
A SOUTHILL man who admitted storing cannabis in the attic of his home after he was threatened by “sinister elements” was sentenced to two years in prison.
David McCormack, aged 53, of O’Malley Park was arrested after gardai searched his home at around 3pm on July 6, 2010.
Det Sgt Gary Thompson of the drugs unit at Roxboro Road garda station said 1.3kgs of cannabis was found hidden under a blanket in the attic of the house.
The street value of the drugs at the time, he said, was €15,810.
Det Sgt Thompson agreed that McCormack had co-operated with gardai and that he had made admissions in relation to he drugs.
Judge Carroll Moran was told the defendant, who has no previous convictions, was an ex-serviceman in the UK and that he had not been “on the garda radar” prior to the incident.
Andrew Sexton SC said his client was a vulnerable man who had been threatened by certain individuals to store the drugs.
“He was the store man and not the owner,” he said adding that his client suffers from depression and would suffer in prison.
Imposing sentence, Judge Moran said he accepted McCormack was acting under duress but added if the courts “don’t do other vulnerable people any favours if they don’t deal with such cases appropriately”.
The judge said the defendant was “storing this illicit contraband” and therefore he was obliged to impose a custodial sentence.
He sentenced McCormack to two years imprisonment.
Judge Moran also ordered the destruction of the drugs seized.
