Limerick man found guilty of drugs charges

A MOYROSS man has been found guilty of posession of almost €145,000 worth of heroin on the outskirts of the city for the purpose of sale or supply.
John McCarthy, 41, of Cliona Park, Moyross had denied having the drugs at Castle Park, Ballygrennan, on October 15, 2010.
It was the state case that McCarthy was one of three men who were observed during a garda surveillance operation entering a drugs factory at an area known as the Four Walls.
McCarthy fled as gardai approached the area but was arrested a number of hours later. Throughout the trial maintained he was checking on his horses in a field nearby and that he was not at the Four Walls on the date of the offence.
Brian McCartney QC, representing McCarthy, urged the jury to acquit his client claiming the evidence was “dangerously weak” and visual identification can be “notoriously unreliable”.
However, following almost two-and-a-half hours of deliberations this afternoon, the jury of six men and six women unanimously found McCarthy guilty of the charges.
He now faces the possibility of at least ten years in prison given the value of the drugs seized.
Two other men previously pleaded guilty to charges relating to the same heroin seizure.
Adam Llewllyn, 19, of Craeval Park, Moyross and James O’Keeffe, 21, of Moylish Crescent, Ballynanty were each sentenced to four years in prison with the final year suspended.
John McCarthy will be sentenced on June 15, next.
