Limerick man convicted of abusing children
Limerick Courthouse, Merchant's Quay 11-12-12
A COUNTY Limerick man convicted of 13 counts of indecently or sexually assaulting six children over two decades has been granted bail ahead of his sentencing hearing.
The 50-year-old, who is originally from West Limerick, had denied the charges, which related to offences which happened at different locations in West Limerick and North Cork on dates between January 1987 and August 2010.
The jury of six men and six women returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all of the charges following less than two hours of deliberations.
During the week-long trial, the jury was told the victims included the accused man’s son and daughter and four members of his extended family.
Evidence was given by each of the victims who described how the defendant had inappropriately touched them or got them to touch him in his genital area.
In his direct evidence, the defendant, who is separated from his wife, said the first he heard of the allegations was when the HSE wrote to him in 2011.
He added that he did not know why the allegations had been made against him. “I didn’t do anything to them,” he said describing the allegations as lies.
Following the guilty verdict, Michael Collins BL, prosecuting, said it would take some time to prepare victim impact statements ahead of the sentencing hearing.
The defendant was granted bail on condition he does not have any unsupervised contact with children between now and the sentencing hearing in April.
He was also ordered to surrender his passport and he must sign-on at his local garda station three times a week.
