Limerick man charged with theft of hundreds of thousands of euros from mart
A KILMALLOCK man has appeared in court charged in connection with the theft of hundreds of thousand of euros from Golden Vale Mart.
Liam Egan, aged 50, of Gortboy, Kilmallock was charged with a total of 12 counts of deception and theft at Golden Vale Mart, Gotoon, Kilmallock.
The total amount is believed to be in the region of €300,000.
The sums allegedly stolen ranged from €3,290 to €69, 610.
Sergeant Damien Holian gave evidence of arresting Mr Egan in Bruff on September 7, last under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.
“I charged him at 10.15am. He replied ‘nothing to say” to each of the charges after caution,” Sgt Holian told Kilmallock court. The offences are alleged to have occurred on unknown dates between 2007 and 2009.
Mr Egan’s solicitor, Declan Duggan, made an application for bail. “I understand the book of evidence is forthcoming,” said Mr Duggan.
Bruff superintendent, Alan Cunningham, said there was no issue in relation to bail after being asked by Judge Mary Larkin.
“He is a family man with roots in the area,” said Supt Cunningham.
Mr Egan was remanded on bail on his own surety of €500 to appear at Kilmallock court on Friday, October 5.
State solicitor, Aidan Judge said the book of evidence is at an advanced stage.
“I anticipate I will have the book of evidence ready for that date in October,” said Mr Judge.
