Limerick man charged with raping six-year-old boy 20 years ago

A LIMERICKMAN has been charged with two counts of raping and sexual assaulting a six-year-old boy in a wooded area 20 years ago.
Detective Garda Deirdre Foley said when she charged the man, who is now 36, he replied: “I did not rape him.”
Det Garda Foley told Limerick Court that the alleged offences date back to 1993.
“The injured party was six, the accused was 16. The complaint was made in 2011,” said Det Garda Foley.
The court heard that the offences are alleged to have occurred on dates between April 1, 1993 and September 30, 1993 in a “wooded area off Limerick Golf Club” in Ballyclough.
On behalf of the state, Det Garda Foley applied for the accused to be remanded in custody because he is living outside the state.
The defendant’s solicitor, Ted McCarthy, applied for bail on behalf of his client, who he said had co-operated fully with the garda investigation.
The solicitor put it to Det Garda Foley that when she got the complaint she went looking for the 36-year-old man.
“He wasn’t in the country so you contacted his parents. My client immediately made contact, kept in contact at all times, returned for questioning and presented himself this morning for the purpose of charging him,” said Mr McCarthy. Det Garda Foley agreed but said she applied for a remand in custody because the defendant lives outside the country and “seriousness of the charges”.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly granted bail of €1,000 and asked for the case to be put in for mention on April 17.
“I’m excusing your client’s attendance on that date,” Judge O’Kelly told Mr McCarthy.
