ILLEGAL cars, scrap metal, unlicensed horses and green diesel have been seized during a major multi-agency raid at a halting site in Rhebogue.
The pre-planned operation, which was led by Limerick City Council and supported by local gardai took place yesterday afternoon and lasted for a number of hours.
More than 70 personnel – including revenue officials, customs officers and inspectors from the Department of Social Protection – descended on the Rhebogue Group Housing Project during the swoop.
Dozens of gardai, including members of the armed regional response unit, provided support during the operation which was targeting the alleged illegal scrapping of end-of-life cars and the burning of tyres at the site.
Although no arrests were made, there was a tense atmosphere at the halting site during the raid as each of the residents were questioned and their homes and property searched.
Over a dozen vehicles were hundreds of tyres were removed from the site during the operation,
Three unlicensed horses were also seized and removed to a pound in Cork and a total of five dogs were also seized.
Last month, 19 unlicensed horses and other items were seized during a similar operation in Southill.
