Limerick gardai to meet with city centre traders

SENIOR gardai from Henry Street garda station are to meet with retailers and businesses from the Thomas Street and Roches Street area in the coming weeks.

Chief Supt David Sheahan told a meeting of the County Limerick Joint Policing Committee (JPC) that the meeting is a follow up to a meeting he attended with traders from across the city centre at the Savoy Hotel last month.

Chief Supt Sheahan said while there have been major improvements in the city centre since that meeting, such as a significant reduction in begging offences, traders on Roches Street and Thomas Street have raised a number of specific issues of concern to them.

He said he hopes to be in a position to address their concerns following the meeting, which will take place before Christmas.

Chief Supt Sheahan added that he and a number of colleagues - including Supt Frank O’Brien - have walked the area themselves to see first hand some of the difficulties.

Separately, gardai say they are working with the NOVAS initiative who recently opened a voluntary soup kitchen on O’Connell Street.

Chief Supt Sheahan told members of the JPC that some of those who travel into the city to attend the soup kitchen are remaining in the city centre afterwards and are causing a nuisance.

“We are working with the soup kitchen to make it less troublesome for the communities affected,” he said.
