Limerick gardai issue warning about handbag snatchers

GARDAI have warned shoppers to be careful following two incidents in which females were targeted in the city.

In one incident a woman was kicked and punched by a gang.

In another a woman out shopping early was helped by gardai who heard her screams after she was attacked.

The first incident happened when the lady who was attacked was walking on Denmark Street on Wednesday last.

“A woman in her early 20s was walking near the junction of Denmark Street and Cruises Street when she dropped her handbag,” said Crime Prevention Officer, Sgt Brian Broderick, Henry Street.

“As she went to pick up her bag she was accosted by three youths who were wearing hoodies,” he explained.

“The young lady was punched and kicked during the incident and the three youths then made off with her handbag which contained a Sony Experia mobile phone as well as a sum of cash.

“Gardaí from Henry Street are investigating this cowardly crime and anyone who was in the vicinity of Denmark Street between 9pm and 9.45pm on Wednesday February 20 is asked to contact them at 061 212400 or information can be passed on using the confidential phone line at 1800 666 111,” he added.

Another lady had a lucky escape when a thief tried to steal her handbag while she was walking on Cecil Street.

This happened early last Tuesday morning at 10.30am on Tuesday March 19.

Two Gardaí were leaving Henry Street station when they heard a woman scream.

They immediately ran in the direction of Cecil Street and met the injured party.

They also observed another woman running away from the scene. The culprit had attempted to steal the lady’s handbag.

One of the Gardaí took off in pursuit of the culprit and she managed to apprehend her.

The matter is now being investigated by the two Gardaí and fortunately the woman was not injured during the incident.
