Limerick gardai investigate ‘suspicious approach’ to children
GARDAI are investigating what was termed a “suspicious approach” to two children in the Kilalee area of the city over the weekend. The incident happened at around 10pm on Saturday as the girls were walking on Downey Street.
“They were approached by a man who was driving what was described as an old type Ford Focus with the letter ‘C’ in the registration. He asked the girls if they wanted to go for a spin,” said Sgt Brian Broderick who said after the girls declined, the car then drove off in the direction of Good Sheppard Villas.
Gardai say the driver of the car was aged in his late 30’s or early 40’s, was of heavy build and had short dark hair.
He was wearing square rimmed glasses and a black Liverpool soccer jersey.
Gardai at Henry Street are investigating the incident and anyone who saw anything suspicious in the vicinity of Downey Street between 9.45pm and 10.15pm on Saturday night or who has any information about either the car or the driver is asked to contact them at (061) 212400.
“We would also appeal to the driver to come forward as other drivers have done in the past,” said Sgt Broderick who added that it is also important for parents to speak to their children about how to deal with an approach from a stranger.
“It is important to impress upon them the importance of reporting any approach that causes alarm to a responsible adult and the gardaí where necessary,” he said.
A number of similar incidents were reported to gardai last year but following investigations none of them were deemed to have been sinister.
“It is important that gardaí are made aware of any approach to a child that causes concern and I want to assure you that all such reports are taken seriously and are fully investigated,” said Sgt Broderick.
