Limerick brothers reunited in heaven after car crash

THE SECOND victim of an horrific road crash in County Limerick has been laid to rest this afternoon.
Nine days after Richard Hourigan was buried in Stradbally cemetery, mourners gathered again in the graveyard to pay their respects to his brother Michael Joe.
The two Ahane men were travelling in a car which was involved in an accident with a jeep at Reilly’s Cross on the Old Dublin Road on Thursday, January 3.
Richard, 77, died hours later, while Michael Joe, 75, lost his fight for life on Saturday afternoon.
Fr Joe Hourigan said at the beginning of the funeral Mass that even though Michael Joe has been critically ill since the tragic accident “we are never prepared for the moment of death”.
“As I said at Richard’s Mass that same sadness, shock and bewilderment just becomes greater for us. Michael lived a quite life, a simple life, sometimes a solitary life but one word that sums him up was ‘gentleness’,” said Fr Hourigan.
Ahane church was filled to capacity.
A member of the well known and highly respected Hourigan family, Michael Joe is sadly missed by his loving sisters Mary (Kelly) and Breda (Keating), brother Dan, brother in law Pat, sisters in law, Eleanor and Carmel, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
While Michael Joe’s condition worsened in the Regional many held out hope that he would pull through as he was an incredibly fit and hardy man.
Richard’s son, Michael, said: “Dad spent a couple of hours with him [Michael Joe] every day, they were so tight it was unbelievable.”
Richard and Michael were both excellent farmers, loved their horses and ponies and described as “two gentleman”.
At the end of the Mass, his brother Dan wished to thank the priests who consecrated the Mass, choir, altar server, paramedics, gardai, fire service, doctors, nurses and staff in the Regional who attended Richard and Michael for their superb car, John Meehan Undertakers, neighbours and friends.
