Hundreds attend funeral of Limerick road victim
Joe Scanlon's coffin is carried from St Joseph's Church, Granagh following his funeral mass
HUNDREDS of people braved the elements as they attended the funeral of Joe Scanlon who died in a road crash at the weekend.
The 29-year-old who was well-known in Granagh, was laid to rest at the local cemetery following his funeral mass at St Joseph’s Church yesterday afternoon.
Prior to his death, the father-of-one had been living at Kingsland in Bruree,
He died in the early hours of Saturday morning after the car he was driving collided with a wall at Kilmore, Granagh. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Members of Granagh United and Ballingarry AFC, both of which he played for, formed a guard-of-honour as his remains were brought from the small church after the funeral mass.
In his homily, Parish Priest Fr Daniel Lane, said Joe was a young man “in the prime of his life” who had been “snatched away” from his family and friends.
He said the Scanlon family had shown great strength and courage since his death and he praised the local community for their support and help since the weekend.
The gifts presented during the funeral mass included an Arsenal soccer jersey, some of Joe’s music cds and a picture of his daughter Sophie.
Loudspeakers were erected outside the church for the funeral mass due to the large congregation that attended despite the heavy rain and wind.
Gardai at Askeaton are investigating the circumstances of Saturday’s accident.
