Gardaí and stadium officials in Thomond Park are reviewing CCTV footage to discover the identity of the person responsible for the throwing of an “offensive object” onto the pitch during last night’s friendly between Manchester City and Limerick FC.

Over 20,000 people crowded into the stadium for the high-profile friendly, which the Premier League champions won 4-0 this Sunday night.

The match was viewed as an immense success both for the local club and the city until reports started to emerge after the match that French player Gael Clichy - a former star at Arsenal - had taken to Twitter to denounce a “banana throwing” incident.

“How sad to see ‘bananas thrown on the pitch’ tonight...Knowing people around the world need food. #nowordsforthis,” wrote the City star on his official profile on the social media site.

A statement issued by Limerick FC and Thomond Park condemned the attack.

“The Gardaí and stadium officials are reviewing the CCTV recordings to attempt to identify an individual involved in the throwing of an offensive object onto the playing field,” reads the statement.

“Any individual identified as being involved in an incident of this nature will be banned from future attendance and the matter will be handed over to the Gardaí. All those involved with the friendly game this evening fully condemn all forms of unacceptable behaviour of this nature.”

A meeting of officials from the club, Thomond Park and Gardaí is taking place this Monday to decide a further course of action, but the Leader understands that no official complaint has been made by the player or the English Premier League team.
