UPDATED: GARDAI say they are treating the death of an eight-year-old boy in Charleville as a tragic incident.

The boy died following an incident at a house at Harrisson Place in the town at around 10am this morning.

It is understood the alarm was raised by ambulance personnel who were called to the house.

The area remains cordoned off pending a full technical examination. “The scene is currently preserved and the gardai are at the scene,” said a spokesperson for the Garda Press Office who confirmed the body of the young boy remains at the house.

A 43-year-old woman, believed to be the young boy’s mother, who was also in the house at the time is being treated at Cork University Hospital.

The services of the State pathologist’s office have been requested and Dr Margaret Bolster is expected to conducts post mortem examination later today.

The results of the post mortem will determine the nature of the garda investigation.
