Gardai issue appeal after Saint Patrick’s Day assault in Limerick

GARDAI have launched an public appeal for information after a young man was seriously injured when he was assaulted in the city centre during the Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations.
The man sustained a number of wounds to his head after he was attacked by a group of men during the early hours of Monday morning.
“It occurred at approximately 2.20am on Monday March, 18 which was the bank holiday Monday,” said crime prevention officer, Sgt Brian Broderick.
According to gardai the victim - a man in his 20’s - was walking on Cecil Street close to the junction with Catherine Street when he was approached and struck on the head with a bottle.
The man was also kicked in the head by his assailants during the incident.
“The injury to his head required a number of stitches however I am happy to say that the man did not sustain more serious injuries,” said Sgt Broderick.
Gardai are viewing CCTV footage from the area as part of their inquiries and, at this stage, believe that up to four individuals were involved in the unprovoked attack.
According to Sgt Broderick, it is likely that there was a large number of people in the area at the time.
“Cecil Street would have been still quite busy at that hour, so we are asking anyone who was in the vicinity of Cecil Street or Catherine Street between 2am and 2.30am and may have witnessed this incident to contact the Gardaí at Henry Street,” he said adding that investigating gardai are particularly appealing to taxi drivers who were working on Saint Patrick’s night to contact them if they were in the area where the attack happened.
