Gardai investigate alleged rape

GARDAI at Roxboro Road garda station have said they are “following a definite line of inquiry” in relation to the alleged rape of a 14 year-old girl in Limerick.

The incident is alleged to have happened on the afternoon of last Sunday, November 25, in the car park of a shopping centre.

Gardai are currently reviewing hours of CCTV footage to identify the movements of the alleged victim and her attackers before the sexual assault, but said they are confident the suspects will be identified.

“We are still in the early stages of an investigation, which is ongoing and we’re following a definite line of enquiry,” gardai attached to Roxboro told the Limerick Leader.

It is understood that the girl was raped by one of two men she met in the shopping centre some hours before the attack in the busy shopping complex. It is suspected that the two men – who are believed to be aged in their late teens or early 20s – met and spoke to the girl and befriended her inside the shopping complex.

After speaking with them for a short period, she was then taken to a van by the two men which was parked in the car park.

It is understood that she claims that she was raped by one of the two men in the back of the van within hours of meeting them.

The victim was medically treated at a sexual assault unit following her ordeal. She will make a detailed statement to officers when deemed sufficiently able for it.

Investigating officers have been studying footage from both inside and outside the complex on that date. Gardai are also attempting to identify the registered owner of the vehicle inside which the alleged rape took place.
