File being prepared for DPP in Brian Fitzgerald murder probe

A FILE is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in respect of a man arrested in the city last week in connection with the murder of niteclub security manager Brian Fitzgerald in Corbally in 2002.
The 34-year-old, who was arrested in the Hyde Road area last Thursday, was released without charge on Friday evening after being held at Henry Street garda station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
He was being questioned about the murder of father-of-two Mr Fitzgerald, who was shot near his home on the Mill Road on November 29, 2002. Mr Fitzgerald had been working as the head of security at Doc’s niteclub at the time of the murder, a crime which shocked the country.
Gardai believe the suspect to have been centrally involved in planning the murder of Brian Fitzgerald, whose efforts in stemming the supply of drugs into his place of work made him a target of Limerick criminals.
As he returned home work in the early hours of that November morning, he was shot dead by an assassin who had been lying in wait near his home at Brookhaven Walk. His widow Alice described hearing shots ring out outside their home as she waited for her husband to return.
While two men are already serving life in prison in connection with the gangland murder, gardai in Limerick have always maintained the investigation is an ongoing one.
English gunman James Martin Cahill - who was paid €10,000 by Limerick criminals to carry out the hit - got a life sentence in 2005.
He had hidden in bushes and opened fire when Mr Fitzgerald arrived home. The bouncer made an effort to escape but was pursued by his killer and shot in the head.
Cahill, now aged 38, escaped from the scene on the back of a motorbike driven by Moyross man Gary Campion.
Feared criminal Campion, 30, was found guilty of the murder of Brian Fitzgerald at the Central Criminal Court in November 2007.
The 9mm handgun used to murder Brian Fitzgerald was later found dumped in the Mulcair River at Annacotty. It had been made in England by two gun enthusiasts who had sold the weapon on to the Limerick criminals.
The man arrested last week is believed to have fled to the UK shortly after the murder of Brian Fitzgerald and is believed to have been a central figure in planning the shocking crime.
