Drugs valued at €40k seized in County Limerick

AS part of ongoing investigations into the supply of drugs in the county, gardai have seized an estimated €40,000 worth of cannabis in Oldtown, Hospital.

A man in his mid-20s who is understood to be from the locality was arrested and questioned following the discovery of the drugs on farmland outside the village.

He was taken to Henry Street garda station for questioning under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

The man was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The discovery follows the seizure of quantities of herbal cannabis in both Kilmallock and Hospital a fortnight ago and the seizure of more than €600,000 worth of cannabis herb and cannabis resin on the Ballysimon Road and in Rhebogue.

“As a result of an ongoing operation further searches were conducted,” explained a garda spokesperson.

“The discovery was made on Friday and it was a joint operation between the division drugs unit and gardai at Bruff,” he added.

Meanwhile, gardai are asking the public to be vigilant following a spate of break-ins to cars in the county in recent days. “We would be appealing to people to secure property in their cars and keep them out of view - put them in the boot and make sure cars are locked,” said the garda spokesperson.

Over the last two weeks, in the region of 10 break-ins have been reported to gardai in areas such as Kilmallock, Ardpatrick, Ballylanders and Pallasgreen. A number of cars were targeted outside the convent in Doon on Sunday morning last while the owners attended 10am mass.

“It appears a lot of the time they target places were meetings are taking place like community centres and cars which might not be secure,” said the garda.
