Drug user faces jail if he fails to comply

A DRUG abuser who was convicted of possession of drugs for the purpose of sale or supply in Charleville has been ordered to cooperate with the probation services or face three months in jail.
Graham Thompson, 27 of Ivy Close, Charleville was before Kilmallock court charged with possession of drug for the purpose of sale or supply at Ivy Close, Charleville on November 5, 2011 and with unlawful possession of drugs Ivy Close, Charleville on the same date.
Solicitor for Thompson, Paul Kearney, said his client who is the father of two children did admit to the offences and acknowledged that he was wrong.
Mr Kearney said Thompson was a young man “trying to do the right thing” but added that his efforts are complicated by a long history of cannabis abuse.
“This affects his ability to deal with the common problems that arise in everyday life,” said Mr Kearney.
The court heard that Thompson came back to Ireland in June 2011 on the promise of a job which subsequently fell through which left his family without any social income for a period of eight months.
Judge Mary Larkin noted that it appeared that Thompson wasn’t suitable for community service.
Judge Larkin noted that her initial order was for Thompson to serve three months imprisonment.
Mr Kearney said that the report before the court mentioned that his client didn’t attend a meeting with the probation services on December 12 due to his confusion about the time.
“It was on at 10.30 but he thought it was on at 12. He got confused, he was very upset,” said Mr Kearney who added that his client did attend a subsequent meeting.
Mr Kearney said his client was someone who needs assistance and who would “greatly benefit” from the appropriate intervention at this time.
The court heard that Thompson is getting assistance from his partner, his mother and two close friends.
Judge Mark Larkin pointed out that “this man was dealing”.
Judge Larkin noted what Mr Kearney was saying and told the court that she could see from the report that he was a serious substance abuser.
Judge Larkin said she would have to decide whether a period in jail would help him “kick his habit”.
Judge Mary Larkin adjourned the matter until March 15 next for a probation report.
Judge Larkin said she was going to note on the file that if Thompson fails to cooperate he will be serving a three month term of imprisonment.
