Burglar leaves shoe behind after being confronted by house occupants

A “CINDERELLA” burglar left his shoe behind after being tackled by the occupants of a house in Raheen, Limerick Court has heard.
Ger Creed, 20, of Oakfield, Raheen, pleaded guilty to burglary and to possession of a stolen set of car keys on January 20.
Inspector Paul Reidy outlined that Mr Creed had gained entry to the house at Oakfield through the front door just after 1am on that date. He left with the set of keys before he was observed by the occupants trying to get into the car.
Mr Creed was confronted by the residents and chased away after a struggle. Gardai who arrived at the scene found a shoe and a phone on the driveway, which the accused later admitted were his.
“He claimed to have no memory of the incident, such was his state of intoxication,” Insp Reidy told Judge Eugene O’Kelly.
John Herbert, solicitor, said Mr Creed had mixed alcohol and tablets and his state on the night was “reflected in the custody record”.
He had left school at 16 but who had nevertheless had a “very impressive employment record”, Mr Herbert said.
The house he entered on the night “backs on to his own home” and had been unoccupied shortly before the incident. The victims still live there but Mr Herbert said there had been “no contact whatsoever” between the parties while the case was pending.
Judge O’Kelly noted that Mr Creed had a clean record and suggested the accused should offer €400 by way of compensation and an apology in advance of his next court date.
The judge paid tribute to “the brave young men who confronted him at considerable risk”.
“If you are dealing with a career criminal, it might be a very foolish thing to confront a burglar,” the judge said.
