800 new plots planned for Limerick city cemetery

LIMERICK City Council is looking to add an estimated 800 extra graveyard spaces to Mount Saint Lawrence Cemetery.
The Mulgrave Street burial ground is close to capacity, and this has forced the local authority to acquire two extra acres from the private market.
This will see an extension of the graveyard left-wards in the direction of Bengal Terrace.
It will be the first extension to the graveyard for 15 years.
Paul Foley of Limerick City Council confirmed the extension will bring with it approximately 800 grave spaces.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Kieran O’Hanlon welcomed the plans, saying it will mean city people will not have to venture into the county to bury their loved ones.
“Obviously, we have to bury the dead somewhere. A lot of people would go to Castletroy instead. It is very far out for people who want to visit their relatives. My own parents are buried up there [in Mount Saint Lawrence], and I would not see any problem with it,” Cllr O’Hanlon told the Limerick Leader.
He believes that there will come a time when cremations become more common than burials, but thinks we are quite far from this yet.
The City East councillor also praised Limerick City Council for their work in maintaining the city’s cemeteries.
The plans to extend Mount Saint Lawrence are currently on public display at City Hall.
Members of the public are being invited to make submissions on the scheme for the next six weeks.
It is then expected city planners will officially give the go-ahead to the proposals, taking into account the views of city people.
As part of the extension, Limerick City Council will also seek to construct 160-metres worth of two metre wide pathways.
The plan also allows for the provision of access openings and gates from the Mount Saint Lawrence access road, and the current Mount Saint Lawrence cemetery which came into being 15 years ago.
Earlier this week, there was dismay when vandals caused €50,000 worth of damage to the graveyard.
Roxboro Gardai are investigating.
