3,000 set for in Limerick Women’s Mini Marathon
UP TO 3,000 women - and some enthusiastic men posing as women in drag - will race for charity, fitness and the sheer fun of it at the Limerick Women’s Mini Marathon this Sunday.
The 8km (5 mile) race will take place in the surroundings of the University of Limerick campus beginning at 12 noon tomorrow.
Organiser Edel O’Shea said they really want to highlight to participants that the race is on at the earlier time of noon this year, and not 2pm as it was in previous years.
Among those flying the flag for men will be Gerard Burke, star of The Biggest Loser programme in the UK, who is continuing to shed the pounds.
Men don’t necessarily have to dress up to enter, but they can’t be prize winners on the day - unless they claim the title of the best dressed male.
There will be prize money for the first ten women past the finish line, with first place getting €500. There will also be age category prizes and spot prizes.
However, you’ll need to be hot on the heels of former winner Rosemary Ryan, who completed the course in a time of 27 minutes and 18 seconds last year.
Charities across Limerick and beyond are still urging people to take part on their behalf to supplement their income in challenging times.
The Irish Cancer Society is among the many charitable organisations appealing to people to take part.
“We need more runners and walkers from Limerick so that we can continue to provide our information and support services in Limerick and throughout the South West,” said a spokesperson.
The most recent data from the National Cancer Registry shows that 1,048 people were diagnosed with cancer in Limerick in 2009.
The organisers of the event are urging people not to take part unless they have paid the entry fee, as it’s unfair to other participants.
The event is organised by Limerick Athletic Club, sponsored by the Limerick Leader, Limerick’s Live 95FM and VHI and run in association with Limerick County Council.
