Is there a visionary in Limerick hurling?

RARELY have Limerick hurling followers left Croke Park feeling as bad as they did last Sunday afternoon, when their team were on the end of a 24-point hiding by our neighbours Tipperary.

The most recent All-Ireland final defeats - in 1994, 1996 and 2007 - all hurt badly but at least the team put up a performance.

As an eloquent correspondent on this page makes clear, a serious re-evaluation of where hurling in the county is heading is now urgently called for.

Rugby has made serious inroads in the wider Limerick community, especially among the young, and Limerick's status as one of the country's top hurling counties cannot be taken for granted. Success breeds success and failure breeds failure.

There are short-term problems, which are addressed in our sports section this week. But there is also the bigger picture and the first thing we need, to end our miserable run of 36 long years without an All-Ireland, is some radical thinking from the County Board.

Is there a visionary among them?
