GARDAI have issued a warning about snow and ice as a national weather alert remains in place.

Gardai tweeted: "Snow-ice warning with temperatures of -2c expected overnight.Check local weather & be aware of the conditions before setting out on your journey. Leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. #WinterReady"

A national yellow weather warning remains in place for snow and ice, while a wind warning is in effect for a number of counties, including Clare.

Met Eireann's forecast for Munster is: Cold and breezy tonight with clear spells. Dry apart from a scattering of showers. Again some will be wintry with accumulations of snow possible over high ground.

Northwest winds will fresh to strong and gusty. Lows of -1 to +2 Celsius with a widespread sharp ground frost and icy patches on untreated surfaces.

Tomorrow, Friday, will be another cold day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Again it will be dry apart from a scattering of showers. The showers will be of hail, sleet and snow with further accumulations possible on higher ground.

High of just 4 to 7 Celsius and mildest near the coast. Fresh, locally strong, and gusty northwest winds will ease away from the west coast as the day wears on.
