Further water restrictions in West Limerick following pollution incident
Limerick County Council has reintroduced water restrictions in a number of towns and villages across West Limerick after oil entered the River Deel from a commercial property.
The council says that the extent of the pollution, which was discovered on Thursday evening, is “worse than initially feared”.
Approximately 1,500 households in Askeaton, Foynes, Shanagolden, Creeves and surrounding areas are affected by the water supply shut-off.
“The Shannon Estuary Water Supply Treatment Plant has been shut down, with a consequential restriction on supplies, both to industrial and domestic users,” said Gerry Behan, director of services at Limerick County Council who added: “The Council is taking all possible steps to minimise the impact of the pollution incident on the River. The Environment Section of Limerick County Council is investigating the matter, but at this stage we do not believe the spillage was intentional”.
A total of eight water tankers have been in place since 8am to serve the needs of the affected communities. Five are located in Askeaton, two in Foynes and one in Shanagolden.
