LIMERICK could get a branch of American Golf, the largest retailer of golf paraphernalia in Europe.

LIMERICK could get a branch of American Golf, the largest retailer of golf paraphernalia in Europe.

An applicant named ‘American Golf’ has sought permission from the City Council to open in one of the units in the Parkway Retail Centre, close to the county/city boundary.

The applicant is seeking permission to change the use of an existing empty unit in the retail park to retail use so it can fit it out.

The vacant unit in question is currently designated for restaurant use.

According to the application, “the work will involve alterations and shop fitting including formation of storage and staff areas.”

On its website, American Golf boasts of being the continent’s largest golf retailer, with 91 stores in Britain and Ireland.

It stocks a full range of golf equipment, including irons, drivers, package sets, balls and clothing.

When recruiting, the firm is keen to take on golf enthusiasts.

The average handicap of the chain’s staff is seven.

At present, American Golf has two outlets in Dublin, and one in Cork.

City planners are expected to rule on the application by the end of October.

If the store gets the go-ahead, it would provide a further boost to the area after a new store opened in the nearby Parkway Shopping Centre on Friday.

The manager there Roger Beck confirmed the children’s clothing store Kimberley’s Closet will open this Friday, creating four jobs in the process.

They will take over two units in the centre, having previously operated as a ‘concession’ within the popular IMASA boutique in O’Connell Street.
