ST Enda’s Community School is facing closure, the Limerick Leader can reveal.

At a meeting of the VEC next Monday, the closure of the community school and its effects on the community will be discussed. The school’s board of management will also meet.

The Kilmallock Road school, which has 127 students, appears to have fallen victim to Government cutbacks. It is thought the small number of students at the school is one of the chief reasons why the school is facing the axe.

Now, southside councillor Jim Long has urged Limerick’s two ministers to work to stop the plan.

“The school is on its knees: It is arguably the most important community school in Mid-West region. But this closure has been imminent over the last two years,” Cllr Long said.

If the school were to close, it would be a further blow to the area, after the swimming pool shut last February.

Teaching staff at the school were meeting on Monday night on the matter.

Cllr Long believes that the Department of Education may move to amalgamate a few schools on the southside.

“But it will still mean we will lose St Enda’s Community school. It is a very special school for some very special students. There should be a push to save the school, but morale is very low out there. There seems to be very little control of the situation in St Enda’s. The staff and pupils are not getting the support, and have not been getting support for a number of months now. Morale is so low, there is a feeling they may just concede it,” he said.

Cllr Long has urged the city’s two ministers Michael Noonan and Jan O’Sullivan to ensure St Enda’s remains open.

He also urged councillors, who are VEC members to act.

If the school was to close, it would be “devastating” for the southside, Cllr Long added.
