Four new classrooms at Limerick national school

MONALEEN National School is seeking planning permission for four new temporary classrooms in order to cater for 125 new students starting in September.
The board of management at the school have applied to Limerick County Council for permission to put in the new classrooms, with the project also to include all site works including road access, and connections to the local sewerage scheme.
School principal Tony Cahill says the expansion is necessary because of the 125 new junior infants starting in the autumn.
They are adding a fifth junior infant class from September, he added.
Local Fine Gael councillor Michael Sheahan, a former teacher at the school, believes the expansion has become necessary because of the fact many young couples who moved to the Castletroy area in the Celtic Tiger era are now having children.
“I do know the school’s books are full for the next couple of years. This is the same as many other schools in the area. But of course I would welcome this application. Monaleen National School has a great tradition, and it is great to see the school growing,” he said.
Fine Gael Dail deputy Kieran O’Donnell, whose base is in the Monaleen area, said he looks forward to working with the school.
“Obviously, it is a very good school, it is a great boost to the area. It obviously is looking for an increase in numbers and I look forward to working with them to achieve this,” he said. The popular school has been expanding in line with the area’s population growth over the last few years.
