Two Mile Inn care home refusal a ‘blow for jobs’
Plans for a nursing home at the former Two Mile Inn have been rejected by An Bord Pleanala
A LOCAL councillor hopes the backers of a 56-bed nursing home proposed for the outskirts of Limerick will resubmit new plans following a reversal at An Bord Pleanala.
Cllr Cathal Crowe said he was “bitterly disappointed” that Clare County Council’s decision to grant permission to the development at the former Two Mile Inn had been overturned on appeal, saying the nursing home could have delivered much-needed employment for the Meelick area.
“Plans to convert the now-closed hotel into a nursing home were lodged with Clare County Council by Cork-based firm O’Moradh Construction in early September 2011. These plans were favourably received by Clare County Council’s planning officers and in November 2011 conditional approval was given to re-open the building as a 56-bedroom, state-of-the art convalescent nursing home,” Cllr Crowe said.
“In September 2010 the Two Mile Inn closed its doors resulting in the loss of 15 local jobs. Over the years the hotel hosted tourists from the four corners of the earth; served as a venue for many happy and sad occasions and acted as a focal point for Meelick people and people residing in the neighbouring communities of Caherdavin, Coonagh and Cratloe. The closure of the hotel marked a dark day for the locality but the proposal to re-open it as a nursing home had generated a lot of hope and optimism in the community.
“There are many jobless people in Meelick and the conversion of the Two Mile Inn to a nursing home would have created much-needed employment. I hope to sit down with the architects responsible for the O’Moradh planning application to see if any aspects of it can be resurrected,” said Cllr Crowe.
An Bord Pleanala rejected the plan after a number of objections from people who had invested in apartments and suites adjacent to the site on which O’Moradh was seeking permission to build the nursing home.
The Two Mile Inn formed part of the Dunne Hotel Group which went into receivership in 2008.
