AN army bomb disposal team was deployed to St Mary’s Park in the city this Thursday after a number of suspicious objects were found during garda searches.

Gardai have confirmed several houses and areas of open space were searched as part of an operation targeting ongoing criminality in the area.

Local detectives and uniformed gardai were assisted by members of the gardai dog unit which is based in Cork during the pre-planned operation.

The assistance of the Defence Forces was requested after a number of suspicious devices were found outside one house at St Munchin’s Street.

While a bomb disposal team was dispatched to the area from Collins Barracks in Cork, a Defence Forces Spokesperson says the call proved to be a false alarm and that no explosive devices were found.

The team has since returned to Cork.

A garda spokesperson says no arrests were made during the operation which is continuing.
