TWO inspirational Limerick mothers have been shortlisted among hundreds nominated for the title of Mum of the Year.

From the several hundred entries received from families across Munster, the Woman’s Way & Lidl Mum of the Year awards judging panel of well-known Irish personalities had the daunting task of whittling it down to just three.

Geraldine Green, 52, from Ballysheedy, said she was “shocked” when told she was a finalist after being nominated by her sister Mary.

Mary Hickey, 56, from Farranshone, was nominated by her daughter Ciara, who praised her mum not just for her contribution to the family but also her artistic and academic achievement.

“Her kindness, compassion, patience and most of all her love and strength inspire me every day,” said Ciara.

Mary had always advocated the importance of education and fulfilling your potential to her children, and then decided that she would like to return to education herself.

She started attending painting classes, returned to study art and gradually made her way to a degree in Fine Art

“At the beginning I had to do the Senior College [Art and Design] portfolio course because I never did the Leaving Certificate. I didn’t intend on going on to college but it just started happening, it just kind of rolled on. I didn’t think I’d even be able to go to college when I hadn’t even a Leaving Cert,” she said.

The third Munster woman to be nominated was Rachel Broderick, 27, from Thurles, county Tipperary, who was nominated by her son and daughter Daniel and Sarah Broderick. The Munster finalists are in the running for the title, which is now in its 11th year, along with €5,000 worth of Lidl vouchers plus over €2,000 worth of pampering and luxury products. The awards will take place at a gala luncheon on July 7 in the Four Seasons Hotel, in Dublin.
