THE death has occurred of Ray Niland, a former consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Limerick’s University Hospital, this Thursday.
Mr Niland, who was 68, passed away at home in Adare after a short illness, surrounded by his family.
The Castlebar man, who played county football for both Mayo and Galway in his younger years, was father to former international Irish tennis players Gina and Conor, the latter whom played at Wimbledon and the US Open in recent years.
Mr Niland was former consultant surgeon in Birmingham’s Midland Eye Hospital, where the family lived for a time, and Limerick’s Regional Hospital as it was known until recently. He also had a private practice in the city.
He is survived by his wife, Pat and children Gina, Ross, Ray and Conor.
A brother of Marie, Margaret (Ryan), Oliver and David, he will be “deeply regretted” by a large extended family, grandchildren and a wide circle of friends.
A former captain of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort, the club extended its wishes to his family this Thursday, saying its “thoughts and prayers are with the whole family”.
Reposing at his home on Friday, October 25, from 3pm to 7pm. Removal to arrive at the Holy Trinity Church, Adare on Saturday for 11am Mass. Burial afterwards in Bohermore Cemetery, Galway, arriving at approximately 2pm.
